'Game of Thrones' Stars Make Their Spinoff Pitches

Kit Harington, Liam Cunningham and other ‘Thrones’ cast members weigh in on the successor series currently in development at HBO.

“Looking for an Onion Knight? Better call Davos!”

Liam Cunningham’s pitch for a Game of Thrones spinoff writes itself, doesn’t it? A show focused on the Stark consigliere running around the Seven Kingdoms talking sense into those in need, long before the term “Night King” was a well-known thing, with Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) doing his best Mike Ehrmantraut impression…

Okay, so that’s nonsense. But the fact of the matter is, the days of Game of Thrones are far from over. Yes, season seven marks the penultimate chapter in the story based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. But Martin’s world is a vast one, with undiscovered countries waiting in the wings, like the jungle continent Sothoryos and the ancient kingdom of Yi Ti. These lands and more could find themselves at the heart of a new Game of Thrones series some day, as HBO continues to develop what Martin has called “successor shows,” with at least four different writers attached to four different projects: Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass), Brian Helgeland (Legend), and Carly Wray (The Leftovers).

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, HBO programming president Casey Bloys was quick to clarify that he doesn’t expect all four shows will go forward, and what’s more, the shows won’t involve characters who currently exist on Thrones.

“It would be insane for a network not to at least entertain the idea of a successor shows — I was going to say ‘prequel’ but they’re not spin-offs because there are no existing characters going off the flagship,” Bloys confirmed. “It’s not Laverne & Shirley from Happy Days; they are prequels. But it would be insane — with a universe like George has created that is so vast and has so many characters and so many timelines — to not, at least, entertain the idea, which is what we’re doing.”

Indeed, the members of the Thrones cast are also entertaining the idea. Speaking with THR this week, they laid out some of their favorite pitches for where Thrones can go next — some more serious than others. Watch the video above for their takes on Westeros’ future beyond Game of Thrones.
