Netflix Stuns HBO: Emmy Nominations by the Numbers

‘Game of Thrones’ was the most-nominated program but HBO for the first time in 18 years did not lead the pack.

For the first time in 18 years, there is a new leader at the top of the most-nominated network list at the Primetime Emmys as streaming behemoth Netflix collected 112 total nominations, topping HBO’s 108 and delivering a loud statement on the state of the industry in the Peak TV world.

Last year, HBO collected 111 nominations to lead the pack, besting Netflix’s 91. Those fortunes were erased this year, despite the fact that HBO’s Game of Thrones was the most-nominated series (22), with Westworld tying Saturday Night Live for second place with 21 overall. Netflix’s most-nominated program was The Crown (13), with Godless and Stranger Things close behind with 12 apiece. Working in Netflix’s favor was the fact that HBO did not have a strong limited series to compete in the category that saw Big Little Lies sweep the genre last year.
